Student flute

This category includes beginner and most step up flutes. Most flutes in this category are made using mass production methods and materials. Price is more of a factor than quality. Service for these flutes is done with the same technics and methods used by the manufacturer. That means padding is done with clamping - a technic that is used to give the pad the impression of the tone hole by applying moisture and heat while clamping the pad down. This is a faster way than shimming and you get an excellent seal. However, in time, the pads tend to expand back thus causing them to go out of adjustment and pads seat is less stable. Most flutes in this category cost less than $1000.

For repair rate purposes, a flute is likely to be considered a student one when
ALL of the following conditions are met:

  1. The flute mechanism (key-work) in not made out of precious metal (body and head may be Silver).
  2. The flute is equipped with adjustment screws.
  3. The flute has Y shaped cup arms.
  4. The flute was made after 1970.
  5. The flute was made by one of the following manufacturers: Armstrong, Artley, Blessing, Buffet Crampon, Bundy, Dean, Emerson, Gemeinhardt, Grassi, Jupiter, Pearl, Selmer, Trevor J. James, Yamaha and most other band instrument makers from Elkhart ID, China and Taiwan.
