The rates below are for most common repairs and flute categories. If your flute/piccolo needs some other kind of work done, does not fit any of my categories, was modified or was made before 1960, it may not be covered by the rates below. Please use the Quote Request form to contact me with more information about your flute/piccolo and the required work.

Clean, oil & adjust - student flute

COA is an annual service. Requires 1 day for completion.

Benefits

  1. Keeps your flute in top playing condition.
  2. May extend time between overhauls.

Procedure
:
  1. Play-test.
  2. Mechanism is removed.
  3. Keys, key tubings and steel rods are cleaned out and oiled
  4. The body is dipped in a silver tarnish solution and is cleaned by hand using a polishing cloth. Keys are cleaned using polishing cloth. No machine buffing is used.
  5. Pads are cleaned out with a soft cloth dipped in oil or alcohol - depending the pad age and condition.
  6. The keys are reassembled and pads are re-seated by clamping using moisture and heat. (This procedure may promote. temporary pad stickiness and may be skipped at the customer's request).
  7. The flute is regulated and any lost motion is removed.
  8. Head cork is checked and replaced if necessary
  9. Play test.

What is a student flute?

  3. Keys, key tubings and steel rods are cleaned out and oiled.
  4. The body is dipped in a cleaning solution and is cleaned by hand using a polishing cloth. Wooden body is cleaned with thin oil and the bore is oiled with almond oil. Keys are cleaned using polishing cloth. No machine buffing is used.
  5. Pads are cleaned out with a soft cloth dipped in oil or alcohol - depending on the pad age and condition.
  6. The keys are reassembled and checked for leaks. Minor pad shimming is done if necessary.
  7. The flute is regulated and any lost motion is removed
  8. Play test.

What is a professional flute?

  6. The keys are reassembled and the pads are re-seated by wet-clamping. (This procedure may promote. temporary pad stickiness and may be skipped at the customer's request).

  6. Inside bore (wood only) is oiled using almond oil.
  7. The keys are reassembled and pads are checked for leaks. Minor re-seated is done if necessary.
  8. The piccolo is regulated and any lost motion is removed.
  9. Play test.

Overhaul - student flute

An overhaul involves the complete reconditioning of the flute including replacement of all pads and felt/cork bumpers. The time between overhauls is dependent on many factors, including the amount of use, climate and the quality and frequency of COA's. A rough average would be 3-5 years. 3-5 days are required for completion.
Procedure:
  1. The flute is play tested and checked for all mechanical and structural work that will be required. If the flute needs work that is out of the scope of the overhaul, I will contact you to discuss the charges. At this point you will have the option not to proceed. The flute will be shipped back/picked up and a $45 minimum charge may apply.
  2. All pinned sections are taken apart.
  3. Pads, corks, felts, foams and headjoint cork are removed and thrown away.
  4. The flute body and keys are dipped in a tarnish remover and/or ultra sonic bath.
  5. Replacement of worn pins, as well as required mechanical and bodywork are done.
  6. The metal parts are cleaned.
  1. New corks, felts and foams are attached. The headjoint cork assembly is polished and a new headjoint cork is installed.
  1. The keys are oiled and assembled.
  2. New pads are installed and are seated the "Elkhart way", i.e. using moisture, heat and clamping. Paper shims are used for the initial seating only.
  3. All adjustments and regulations are done.
  4. The instrument is play tested.
  5. The flute case is cleaned.

    Unless requested otherwise, Pisoni Premium Deluxe, double layer treated skin pads are used.
    Straubinger pads are available (and highly recommended) at extra charge.

If the flute needs work that is out of the scope of the overhaul, I will contact you to discuss the charges. At this point you will have the option not to proceed. The flute will be shipped back/picked up and a $45 minimum charge may apply.
    2. All key-work is removed and pinned sections are taken apart.
    3. Pads, corks, felts, foams and headjoint cork are removed and thrown away.
    4. The flute body and keys are then dipped in a tarnish remover and/or ultra sonic bath.
    5. Key tubing swedging, replacement of worn pins, and key fitting, as well as required mechanical and body work are done.
    6. The precious metal parts are shined and treated with silver/gold polish.
    7. New corks, felts and foams are attached. The headjoint cork assembly is polished and a new headjoint cork is installed.
    8. The keys are oiled and assembled.
    9. New pads are installed and are seated using only paper or plastic shims. No clamping whatsoever is done on professional flutes.
    10. All adjustments and regulations are done.
    11. The flute is play tested.
    12. The flute case is cleaned, then shimmed (if necessary) so that the instrument fits snugly.

    10. The piccolo is play tested.
    11. The piccolo case is cleaned.

        Hourly rate

        Any repair work with no established rate is charged on an hourly basis. An estimate/quote is always given before hand so there are no surprises. A $45 minimum charge may apply if you decide not to go ahead with the repair.

        $75/hr

        Minimum charge

        This is the minimum charge for any repair work charge by the hour. Any job up to 36 minutes of labor will be charged by this rate.
